Mobile Health Project

PREVIEW
One of the major problems that exists today is inadequate health care facility. In many world’s impoverished regions, health care is virtually non-existent. The reason is partly because of transportation problems, lack of medical facilities, high cost of permanent medical facility. Thus communities in Bayelsa East are not exempted from these problems.

BAYELSA EAST AND HEALTH CARE DELIVERY
Bayelsa East, located at the heart of river Niger’s delta, is traversed by rivers and creek which has made water transportation the most widely available and accessible means of transportation/communication. Considering the peculiar geographical terrain of the area, bringing qualitative and accessible medical services to the people of the region becomes a paramount concern. Thus, Amange Foundation proposes a Mobile Health Project.

Mobile health care delivery through mobile clinic seeks to improve the health delivery system in water-locked regions of Bayelsa. This scheme/project rides on the use of mobile medical ship clinic (with shallow draft) hosting some boats which can easily negotiate shallow waters in the delivery of medical aids to the people of the Niger Delta region. Thus a mobile medical clinic, with proper planning and administration, will service a whole lot of communities and villages without any domiciled medical facility.

THE FOCUS
The mobile health care delivery focuses on emergency health care and disease prevention. The medical boats that will accompany the mobile health facility (ship) will deliver specific medical care/treatment. These medical services include the following:

  1. General medical treatment
  2. O&G, Dental & Eye care
  3. General health campaign and awareness.
  4. General health screenings
  5. Peace Campaigns and humanitarian works.

Each boat will be equipped with the supplies and equipment necessary for the medical care identified as needed for a specific region.

MODE/SCOPE OF OPERATION

The mobile clinic team of health care professionals and para-professional will utilize a boat outfitted with medical equipment and supplies to provide basic healthcare intervention and community health accessments which include the following:

  • Implementation of WHO Safe Motherhood need assessment.
  • Outfitting of mobile clinic and staff recruitment and training
  • Provision of “basic medical package” for prenatal and pediatric care,
  • Including diagnostic and treatment services by experienced and trained staff.
  • Screening of anemia for all pregnant women
  • Screening and treatment of malaria for all pregnant women
  • Public health and Sanitation campaigns: focusing attention on basic hygiene and sanitation, specific diseases, community preventive measures and aimed at specific populations.
  • Internet and telephone facility for proper communications from and to remote locations.

The accommodation of the staff and patients should not be misunderstood. The accommodation is for one doctor (1) and three auxiliary workers are standard. The accommodation for about four (4) patients is a social service addition. The mobile clinic is essential for outpatients only.
