“Education is wealth,” says Sen. Nimi Barigha-Amange. Moreso, proper education of the Niger Delta youths will be an important milestone in the campaign for peace in the Niger Delta region. Thus, this is the first scheme of the Amange Foundation which was flagged off in 2002. This scheme comprises two projects. They include:
- Remedial Education Project, REP
- Scholars' Aid Scheme
1. REMEDIAL EDUCATION PROJECT, REP:
This project helps in restoring and promoting the realization of a dream career among school drop-outs, secondary school students, and young adults in Bayelsa East. REP is a sort of education campaign that helps promote learning up to tertiary institution level in the three local government areas namely - Nembe, Ogbia and Brass LGA - covered by the Amange Foundation.
The packages:
- Stage One: Free registration of WASC, NECO and JAMB.
- Stage Two: Scholarship award to students in Nigerian tertiary institutions
Stage One: This is basically an education campaign in both secondary schools and public places. This leads to the free registration of 150 selected students for WASC, NECO and JAMB exams. 50 students is selected from each of the three local government areas covered by the Amange Foundation. These youths or students are freely registered as external candidates for the exams mentioned above.
Stage Two:
Success in stage one, gives one access to the scholarship scheme of stage two. Scholarship is awarded to those drop-outs that succeeded in the WASC, NECO and JAMB exams and wishes to further education. However, sadly, some decide to quit or opt out after with the above-mentioned exams. Nevertheless, the scholarship incentive was deliberately instituted inorder to motivate the youths towards higher academic attainments.
Successes
Presently, within 5 years of conception, Amange Foundation has produced 6 graduates; many still undergoing undergraduate studies in Nigerian universities.
